June already, can you believe?! We’re already six months into the year and what a six months it has been. My summer has already gotten off to a great start with a long weekend in Amsterdam, and there’s plenty more excitement to come. I hope you all have amazing plans this summer too!
Now, on to the reason we’re all here, this month’s Birchbox. It’s actually going to be my last Birchbox for a while, as I’ve cancelled my subscription. I felt that for the last few months I wasn’t getting things I was all that interested in and I’d rather put the monthly fee towards something else. What a great month to end it on though. June is Birchbox’s 5th birthday, and to mark the occasion this month’s box was a special anniversary collector’s tin, designed by Whittard.
Inside the box there was:
- Polaar Face and body sun cream (factor 30)
- Number 4 Jour d’automne Smoothing Balm
- amika Bombshell Blowout Spray
- Ella Eden Compact Eyeshadow – in shade Faith
- Benefit The POREfessional Pearl Primer
- Whittard of Chelsea Earl Grey, Mango & Bergamot and Lemon & Ginger Tea Bags
As this was my sixth Birchbox, I also got VIP status which meant I received a bonus gift – a cute little make up bag!
I’ve been needing a sun cream for my face for a while now, but it’s one of those things I’ve put off purchasing. Now it’s summer though, I should really be using one daily, so I was pleased this arrived in the box. It has a very light weight, silky texture, a pleasant scent and most importantly for face creams, doesn’t leave the skin feeling greasy. I’ve yet to use it under makeup but I have high hopes!
My hair can be very frizzy when left to air dry and I’m always on the lookout for a smoothing balm that can properly do the job. You apply this one to damp hair and then either blow dry or air dry – simple enough. I’m not a fan of the scent of this balm. It smells rather musky.
Another hair product, this time a blow dry spray. I am not coordinated/skilled enough to blow dry my hair. I wish I could as I love getting my hair blow dried, but I usually end up giving up with my hair only half dry. This spray supposedly gives your hair more texture and lift when blow dried and it smells divine!
I’ve never heard of Ella Eden cosmetics before, and this month contained a full sized eye shadow. I got the shade ‘Faith’, which is a medium brown with just a hint of shimmer. On first swatch I was impressed. It’s nicely pigmented, feels very velvety on the skin, blends out well and even has a nice scent. I seem to be amassing quiet the collection of brown eye shadows so whilst Faith is a nice addition, I would have rather received a different shade.
I was really excited when I saw there was a Benefit POREfessional Pearl Primer in this month’s box. However I was quickly disappointed when I saw how small the sample actually was – a rather tiny 3ml tube. You’d only get one or two applications out of it before it was all gone – hardly enough to really get a proper feel of it. I’ve used the original POREfessional and liked it, and this one is supposed to have a pearly shimmer to it but that didn’t really show on my skin. Overall, I was not that impressed.
Finally, as part of the 5th birthday celebrations, Whittard, who designed the tin, supplied some fruity tea bags. I’m not really an earl grey fan but I did enjoy the Mango & Bergamot.
Overall, I’m glad I decided to cancel my Birchbox subscription. Whilst the novelty of all the different samples was good to begin with, after a while, I just felt like I wasn’t getting things I actually wanted, or kept getting really similar stuff. There’s only so many hair balms a girl needs after all! Maybe when my money situation is a bit different I’ll give Birchbox another go, or even try a different subscription service.
Those were my thoughts on this month’s Birchbox but what were yours? Did you get any different items? Let me know in the comments!
